White Picket Fence

I've been exploring the points of views of others for which, for some reason, I have made true for myself.  I could go into a long commentary about the ideals surrounded around women, but this point of view has been digested and regurgitated for far to all.

This painting was sitting for awhile, not knowing what it truly wanted to be until this morning.  I like it when the idea is not there and then there, purely in this fleeting moment the idea, paint, tape, and title comes together.  It was time to be in this world.

The title "White Picket Fence" is about all the points of views that we've claimed as truth.  We've tried so hard to fit ourselves into molds that don't belong to ourselves and when we don't fit into a fixed ideal then a vicious cycle of self loathing, depression, and hopelessness can occur.

I dedicate this painting to all who have struggled with being there authentic selves, broken out from their own white picket fences and are now living a life that is truly theirs to claim.

  1. That is an intriguing analogy... I love the way you see things and than portray them in drawings and paintings:)

  2. That is a very powerful message indeed, Suzanne :). To be honest when I think of picket fences I think of conformity, and how people identify them with a comfortable home where they can raise a family. It's a very strong symbol.

    1. Thanks Petronela!!! The meaning of this symbol is exactly why I used it. We can never follow our own authentic voices when buying into fixed ideals about how to live our life. Thanks for your meaningful comment!!

  3. Hi Suzanne,

A most profound analogy and I know that I cannot live a lie. The truth is beyond the white picket fence for all those who wish to truly see it.

Peace and contentment to you, my friend.

    1. Gary, very well stated!!! But I will add that some people find their truth in society and if this is true for them then it is no longer a white picket fence. It is when we judge others for living how they want to live is when we become trapped. The truth is such a relative idea!!! All that said, I prefer to live beyond the fence. :)
Sending you much kindness and truth,
      Suzanne

  5. A privacy fence is a nice way to keep out unwanted eyes from your yard or home. These are generally solid fences that are fairly high so people can not easily peer over them.
